Phylum Annelida

Segmented Worms

Segmented worms are a complex group of animals related to earthworms, possessing segmented bodies, complete digestive tract, complex nervous system, and bristle-like setae used for locomotion.  They may either be active or sedentary, free-living or tube-dwelling, with a variety of feeding methods.

Setae are sharp, deliver painful wounds and difficult to remove.  Don't touch!

    CHRISTMAS TREE WORM

Common in Porites corals and limestone reef rock.  The worm's body creates a tunnel and extends a pair of colorful crowns that function as gills and food gathering devices.  The crowns are rapidly retracted when disturbed and the hole is covered by a hard operculum.  The crowns of Hawaiian worms are especially sensitive to movement and at only 1/2 inch tall are dwarfs compared to those seen elsewhere.

Common in tidepools, shallow reefs, and rubble.  Feeding tentacles are extended from the animal's body buried in the substrate.  The body is about 12 inches and the tentacles may be more than 4 feet long.  Preyed upon by large cone shells.

Thelepus setosus

Kaneohe Sandbar, Oahu, 30 feet

TUBE WORMS

Abundant in silt and rubble on calm reefs, deep bays and lagoons.  Worldwide distribution.  Tube diameter less than 1 cm.

Mesochaetopterus sagittarius

Kapoho Point, Kailua, Oahu

TURF TUBEWORMS

These minute worms form dense colonies on wave benches.  Tubes only 3/8 inch tall are composed of sand grains glued together.  Sand and algae then accumulates between to form a carpet or mat.
