With commensal crabs, Ma'alaea Bay, Maui


Uncommon in tidepools, shallow reefs, and rubble.  Banded feeding tentacles are extended from the animal's body buried in the substrate.  Attains 12 inches, tentacles may exceed 4 feet.  Preyed upon by large cone shells.  The Hawaiian endemic commensal crab Aphanodactylus edmonsoni hides within the worm's tube.  Warm & temperate seas worldwide.
