HAWAIIAN LINCKIA LIMPET

These parasitic, limpet-like shells are rare beneath Linckia sea stars.  The protruding apex is coiled 180 degrees, the aperture is 4/5 of the shell diameter, and irregular scaly ribs with narrow interspaces.  Attains 0.5 inch, 12 mm.  Endemic to Hawaii.  The lump on the sea star's upper surface (underside in photo) contains a Sea star eulimid, Stilifer linckiae.
