Phylum Arthropoda

Arthropods

Arthropods are invertebrates that have bilaterally symmetrical bodies and jointed appendages.  Most marine species have a hard outer shell composed of proteinaceous chitin called the exoskeleton.  Growth is accomplished by shedding the exoskeleton periodically and inflating the body with fluid before allowing the new skin to harden.
