BASTARD SANDALWOOD    NAIO

Locally common shrub or small tree from dry coastal plains to the sub-alpine zone.  Leaf form & flower color varies by locality.  Greenish yellow wood has strong fragrance and was substituted for true sandalwood when that resource was depleted by the late 1800's.  Indigenous to Hawaii and Mangaia (Cook Islands).
