Family Cassidae
Helmets
| Helmets live in sand and prey upon echinoderms, especially sea urchins
and sand dollars. They differ from tuns, being solid, forming a
broad parietal shield around the aperture, and possessing an operculum.
This is a popular family among collectors for their size, beauty, and
variety. Hawaii is comparatively poor in terms of species diversity,
and all but the Horned helmet prefer deep water. |
