Daisy Corals
are common throughout the Indo-Pacific but absent in Hawaii. The skeleton is quite
porous and therefore relatively fragile but fast-growing and the extended polyps
have 12 tentacles. They are found
in a variety of habitats and are generally encrusting, massive, or have stubby
branches. Identification of many species is difficult even for
experts. Formerly a member of Family
Poritidae.
All
coral skeletons illustrated are from scientific collections taken prior
to 1998.
