HAWAII - CULTIVATED

Hibiscus tiliaceus

Thick-leaf variety

Cultivated, Waimanalo, Oahu

THICKLEAF HAU

Shrub grown from seed collected at UH Manoa growout facility.  Potted plant incorrectly labeled as Lebronnecia kokioides.  Likely a hybrid form of Hibiscus tiliaceus and related species.  Leaves stiff & entirely glabrous, 10cm long, new leaves light green, large oval bracts at leaf axils, petals 2.5 inches long, corolla opening halfway, fading red.  Apparently self-incompatible, pollination attempts fail to produce seed.
