Rare at depths of 400 to 700 feet.  Attains 24 inches.  Described as a new endemic species in 2006.  Previously known in Hawai‘i as Bodianus oxycephalus (Japan) or Bodianus vulpinus (Western Australia).  Bodianus unimaculatus occurs from SE Australia to Easter Island.
