Tilefishes

 

Tropical tilefishes create burrows and feed upon small invertebrates buried in sand.  They are skittish and dive into their home when alarmed.  Tilefishes have sharp teeth and a large spine on the gill cover.  Bluefish from the Atlantic are members of this family.

FLAGTAIL TILEFISH

Occasional in burrows on sand flats in deeper water.  Feeds upon worms and crustaceans.  Swims with undulating motion.  Attains at least 12 inches.

Fairly common on sandy areas adjacent to rocky reefs and kelp forests.
