Rare on shallow reefs exposed to surge, more common around Maui and the island of Hawai‘i.  May hybridize with Acanthurus achilles.  Attains 8 inches.  Western Australia to Okinawa, Hawaii, French Polynesia, and the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
