An uncommon solitary species found in
crevices at scuba depths. Protruding snout with a large spine on
the preopercular gill cover, fin rays orange or yellow, and the spiny dorsal
fins is vermilion. Frequently captured for consumption, it is
known locally as ‘ala‘ihi mama. Attains 18
inches. Hawai‘i and
the Indo-Pacific. |
