Fairly rare along deep ledges from 450 to 750 feet
now depleted due to overfishing. Deep- bodied, pink with yellow
Attains 16 inches. An excellent food fish with fine white flesh
occasionally captured while fishing for Pink or Long-tail Red Snapper,
it is a member of the Deep Seven.
The Hawaiian name ‘ukikiki is rarely used today in
favor of the Japanese name gindai which means 'gold snapper'.
