Pristipomoides zonatus

BANDED SNAPPER    'ukikiki or gindai    Shima-chibiki

Fairly rare along deep ledges from 450 to 750 feet and now depleted due to overfishing.  Deep- bodied, pink with yellow diagonal bands.  Attains 16 inches.  An excellent food fish with fine white flesh occasionally captured while fishing for Pink or Long-tail Red Snapper, it is a member of the Deep Seven.  The Hawaiian name 'ukikiki is rarely used today in favor of the Japanese name gindai which means 'gold snapper' East Africa to Japan, Hawai'i and French Polynesia.
