BANDED SNAPPER    ‘ukikiki or gindai    Shima-chibiki

Fairly rare along deep ledges from 450 to 750 feet and now depleted due to overfishing.  Deep- bodied, pink with yellow diagonal bands.  Attains 16 inches.  An excellent food fish with fine white flesh occasionally captured while fishing for Pink or Long-tail Red Snapper, it is a member of the Deep Seven.  The Hawaiian name ‘ukikiki is rarely used today in favor of the Japanese name gindai which means 'gold snapper'.  Hawai‘i and the Indo-Pacific.
