Snapper-like fishes of deep reefs which have small scales and highly extendible jaws.  They feed upon large zooplankton.  Occasionally landed by the deep bottomfish fishery.

KARNELLA'S ROVER or PINK OPELU

Occasionally captured with 'opelu at night but rests at depths of 400 to 900 feet.  Dark pink with fine scales, lacking bony scutes ahead of caudal peduncle.   Attains 12 inches.  Occurs in Hawai'i, Guam, and Easter Island.
