Uncommon in small groups under
ledges at scuba depths during the day in Japan and the Northwestern
Hawaiian Islands but rarely seen around the Main Hawaiian Islands.
A popular Japanese sport and food fish. Young are silver with
black close-set puzzle-like spots that eventually merge and fade, large
adults have an ugly appearance with white around the mouth. Rarely
hybridizes
with the Barred Knifejaw. Attains at least 28 inches.
