The only reef-dweller in Hawaii is rarely seen and prefers the cooler waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.  It has been spotted off Kauai and Maui in deep water.  Armorheads inhabit deep seamounts in nearby waters.

  WHISKERED BOARFISH or ARMORHEAD         Tengudai

A large deep-bodied fish with numerous stubby whiskers.  Clear yellow fins and spots on the face.  A nocturnal fish found as pairs under ledges.  Adults are usually 12 inches long.  Rare in deep water except at Midway and Izu Islands of Japan.
