Rarely seen as it remains buried in sand until it
emerges at night to spawn and die
soon after. Protruding lower jaw, juveniles pink with small eyes
embedded in clear tissue, pectoral fins absent; mature females and males
with larger eyes, dark brown and white below, becoming yellow toward the
tail, caudal rays black, pectoral fins larger in males. Attains 18
inches.
Endemic to Hawai'i.
The specimen illustrated was collected by Lois Crozer
on 11/24/2022. It washed ashore dead on Lanikai
Beach, Oah'u, with a Portuguese Man-'o-War tentacle choking its neck.
It appears to be an young adult based on color, length of 9
inches, and eyes still embedded in clear tissue, it also has small
pectoral fins.
