Common on shallow reefs exposed to surge where it farms filamentous algae. Stegastes nigricans has a black spot where the dorsal fin meets the caudal peduncle.  Attains 6 inches.  East Africa to French Polynesia.  Replaced in Hawaii by Plectroglyphidodon marginatus.  Formerly known as Stegastes fasciolatus.
