Abundant among outer reef dropoffs at any depth.  Brown (blue-gray in juveniles), white posterior from last quarter of dorsal and anal fins, black spot with light trailing edge at base of pectoral fin.  Attains 3.5 inches.  Indonesia to Okinawa, east to French Polynesia, excluding Hawai'i.  Formerly known as Chromis margaritifer.
