Schooling by day in dark holes of rocky reefs and seawalls to 15 feet; young in tidal pools and brackish water.  Feeds upon planktonic crustaceans and small fishes.  Attains 15.5 inches.  Indo-Pacific, Tropical Eastern Pacific, and Red Sea, excluding Hawaii.
