Family Acroporidae

NW HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

Montipora cf. flabellata

East Lagoon, Midway Atoll, 6 feet

BLUE RICE CORAL

Common in the lagoons of Midway, Kure, and Maro Reef.  Colonies may be a combination of encrusting sheets, plates, and vertical columns with flaring pale tips, brown with purple, pink, or blue fluorescence.  Calices are immersed between short & somewhat sharp ridges.  May be confused with Montipora flabellata, which has long irregular tubercules that form meandering ridges with rounded or flat tops.  This species complex requires additional study.
