Family Acroporidae

Montipora dilatata

East Lagoon, Midway Atoll, 6 feet

Moku o Loe, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, 3 feet

Kane'ohe Bay, Oahu

Common in the lagoons of Midway, Kure, and Maro Reef; rare within Kane'ohe Bay.  Colonies may be a combination of encrusting sheets, plates, and vertical columns with flaring pale tips, brown with purple, pink, or blue fluorescence.  Calices are immersed between short & somewhat sharp ridges.  May be confused with Montipora flabellata, which has long irregular tubercules that form meandering ridges with rounded or flat tops.  It is also confused with the Indo-Pacific Montipora turgescens.  This three-species complex requires additional study.
