Rare on shallow reefs in calm water.  Colonies may be a combination of encrusting sheetsand vertical columns with flaring pale tips, brown with purple, pink, or blue fluorescence.  Calices are immersed between short fused ridges.  May be confused with Montipora flabellata, which has long irregular tubercules that form meandering ridges with rounded or flat tops.  This species complex requires additional study.
