Seaweeds, also known as marine algae, are abundant in the shallow ocean to as
deep as sufficient sunlight allows photosynthesis to take place.
In the tropics this can be extend to at least 100 meters. Four
groups of macro-algae are common on reefs throughout Hawaii and the
Indo-Pacific but due to the low nutrient levels in tropical water, large
species such as kelp are absent. Many species of algae are edible
and commercially important as food products and various industrial
applications. |
