COMMON or BLACK NERITE PIPIPI
| Abundant in the high intertidal zone.
The plain black shell has spiral grooves, the inner lip has three teeth,
and the peg-less operculum is olive brown.
Eaten during times of famine. Attains
1 inch, 25 mm. Endemic to Hawaii, but waifs have been
collected at the Line Islands, Wake Island, Fiji, Ryukyus, and Indonesia. May be confused with the
white-spotted Neritina neglecta
in brackish environments. |
