HAWAIIAN BRACHIOPOD

Uncommon in southern Kane'ohe Bay, where it is buried several inches deep in silty sand, with two breathing holes hinting at its presence.  The animal is anchored with a long fleshy stalk, and the thin upper and lower valves are coated by brown periostracum.  Shells attain a length of 1.5 inch.  Endemic to Hawaii.
