Sandburrowers
| Tiny fishes rarely seen as they remain partially buried in coarse
sand in sand pocket and channels near hard reef. The best way
to detect them is to make a claw with your hand and slide the
fingertips forward through the sand. Any fish present will
rapidly dart away before diving back into the sand about a foot
away. If you are lucky one may come to rest on hard bottom
long enough for a closer look. I learned this technique from
the famous ichthyologist Dr. John E. Randall. |
