Relatively
rare at scuba depths around the Main Hawaiian Islands, but common in
cooler waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and rocky areas of
Central Japan. Color and pattern variable. Highly sought as
an aquarium specimen. Attains 3 feet. Scattered locations
from Reunion to Japan, Hawaii, and French Polynesia. Formerly known as Muraena pardalis.
