Forms aggregations high above reefs, ledges, walls, and wrecks exposed to current to 150 feet.  Feeds upon zooplankton.  Head color variable.  Attains 7 inches.  Indonesia to Japan, Hawai'i, and Pitcairn Island.  Replaced in the Indian Ocean by Hemitaurichthys zoster.
