Montipora
dilatata
PURPLE RICE CORAL
|
Common in the lagoons
of Midway, Kure, and Maro Reef; rare within Kane'ohe Bay. Colonies may be
a combination of encrusting sheets, plates, and vertical columns with
flaring pale tips. Calices are immersed between short & somewhat
sharp ridges. May be confused with Montipora flabellata,
which has long irregular tubercules that form meandering ridges with
rounded or flat tops. It is also confused with the Indo-Pacific
Montipora turgescens. This three-species complex requires
additional study.
