Periwinkles are algal grazers found high above the waterline on rocky shores.  They move vertically with the tide.  They are capable of trapping water within the shell and hibernate for extended periods if required.

Common in small pools & crevices in the high intertidal zone.  Adults develop pronounced spiral keels.  Attains 1/4 inch.  Hawaii & the Indo-Pacific.

DWARF PACIFIC PLANAXIS

Abundant under stones on rocky shores with fresh water seeps.  Shell covered with a fuzzy brown periostracum.  Attains 1/2 inch.  Hawaii through the Southwest Pacific.
