HAWAIIAN BURNT MUREX

Rare on ledges at depths exceeding 60 feet, but common as shallow as 25 feet at Midway Atoll.  Color varies from cream to dark brown, usually encrusted by coralline algae.  Feeds upon bivalves.  Attains 4 inches.  Endemic to Hawaii.
