SPIRULA or RAM'S HORN SQUID

This chambered buoyancy regulating shell is embedded within the mantle of a small 2 inch squid living at depths between 300 to 3000 feet.  After the animal dies shells rise to the surface and may eventually wash ashore far from their origin.  Animals are known to hover vertically and possess a luminous organ on top.  Warm seas worldwide.
