'OHI'A LEHUA

Shrub or tree common in wide variety of habitats & elevations from barren lava flows to montane wet forests & bogs of the Main Hawaiian Islands.  Variable in growth form, leaf shape.  Flowers usually red, sometimes orange or yellow, rarely white.  Individual varieties described below.

'OHI'A LEHUA

The most common & widespread of member of the genus. Shrub or small tree of middle to high elevations from Oahu to Hawaii.  Ovate to suborbicular leaves with undersides densely coated with hairs and rolled margins.  Apex rounded to retuse, base cordate.

Shrub or tall tree of low & middle elevations from Oahu to Hawaii.  Ovate to suborbicular leaves with undersides densely coated with hairs and flat margins.  Apex rounded to retuse, base cuneate to rounded.

'OHI'A LEHUA

Shrub or tall tree of middle to high elevations from Kaua'i to Hawaii.  Ovate, obovate, or elliptic leaves lacking hairs or rolled margins.  Apex rounded to acute, base rounded, cordate, or cuneate.

'OHI'A LEHUA

Small tree of mesic & wet ridges, endemic to Oahu's Ko'olau Mountain range.  Leaves broadly ovate without hairs, petioles 1/2 to 1/3 as long as the blade.  Large yellow flowers (rarely red) with persistent bracts.

Shrub or small tree with somewhat drooping branches endemic to Oahu's mesic or wet ridges & slopes.  Leaves lanceolate without hairs, petioles & midrib usually red.

Shrub or tree on mesic & wet ridges & bogs from Kaua'i to Maui.  Light pink stamens are only 1mm long.  Endemic to Hawaii.

Small tree in disturbed dry, mesic & wet habitats.  An invasive species readily dispersed by birds, forming thickets.  Leaves thin with prominent veins.  Wild trees have yellow fruits with pink flesh.  Native to Tropical America.

STRAWBERRY GUAVA    WAIAWI 'ULA'ULA

Small tree in disturbed mesic & wet habitats.  A serious invasive species readily dispersed by birds, forming monospecific stands choking out other plants.  Leaves thick & waxy.  Fruit usually red but two forms with larger yellow fruit also exist in Hawaii, sweet pulp is white.  Native to Tropical America.

PAPERBARK or WHITE BOTTLEBRUSH

Large tree used for reforestation in mesic forests of Hawaii.  Thick spongy bark easily comes off in layers.  Native to Eastern Australia, New Guinea & New Caledonia.

Small tree planted in gardens & occasionally found wild or abandoned in valleys.  Sour fruits are edible.  Native to Tropical South America.

Large tree weedy in mesic disturbed lowlands & valleys.  Thin-skinned purple fruits are sour but edible.  Fallen fruits stain the ground creating a mess.  Native to India & SE Asia.

Large tree weedy in mesic & wet disturbed lowlands & valleys.  Large yellow fruits have a pleasing sweet-spicy flavor.  Native to SE Asia.

RAINBOW EUCALYPTUS, MINDANAO GUM

Large tree with smooth variegated bark naturalized on mesic slopes.  Introduced for reforestation.  Native from the Philippines to New Guinea.
