Uncommon endemic subshrub with strongly-curled stiff leaves 0.4 to 0.8 inch long having a shiny surface and strongly-toothed margins.  A dwarf form that occurs among the understory on old lava flows of Hawaii Island.  This is the least common of several variable forms.
