PINEAPPLE

Sharp-leaved perennial in cultivation for its fruit.  Native to South America.  First introduced to Hawaii in the early 1800's with the first plantation established in 1886.  New plants are grown from replanted fruit crowns or lateral suckers.  Fruit should be picked ripe as they will not continue to ripen later.
