Razorfishes

 

Razorfishes have high foreheads and are compressed vertically.  They feed upon crustaceans and mollusks in sand or rubble.  They have the curious habit of diving into the sand for protection and are difficult to approach.  Known locally as Nabeta.

Endemic to Hawaii.  Fairly common over sandy areas at scuba depths.  Attains 9 inches.

BRONZEBAR RAZORFISH

Uncommon at scuba depths.  Has large dark patch behind pectoral fin and blotch on caudal peduncle.  Similar to the endemic I. umbrilatus.  About 8 inches.

WHITEPATCH RAZORFISH

Uncommon over sand at scuba depths.  Juveniles are common during summer.  Juveniles banded with dark brown, adults gray with large white patch on side and 3 dorsal spots.  Males have yellow patch behind pectoral fins, dark in females.  Reaches 8 inches.  Central & Western Pacific.

PEACOCK RAZORFISH         LAENIHI         Hoshi-tensu

Uncommon on sand flats at scuba depths.  Juveniles common during summer.  Coloration variable with age; black form is rare.  Attains 12 inches.  A popular food fish.  Indo-Pacific including the tropical Eastern Pacific.

Endemic to Hawaii.  Fairly common on sand flats at any depth.  Small black spot on the caudal peduncle.  About 8 inches.
