Common over rubble and sand from 30 to 600 feet.  Feeds upon invertebrates, fishes, and algae.  Adult may appear very dark with white ring on caudal peduncle.  A large but shy species frequently caught while bottom fishing.  Attains 15 inches.  East Africa to Japan, Hawaii, and the Marquesas.  Formerly known as Sufflamen capistratus and Sufflamen fraenatus.
