 SAILFIN TANG        māne'one'o

Locally common in sheltered bays among coral where it feeds upon filamentous algae.  Typically forms a pair bond.  Extends broad dorsal and anal fins when disturbed.  Yellow stripes may disappear at will, appearing brown overall.  Juveniles have extremely tall fins.  Attains 16 inches.  Indonesia to Okinawa, Hawai'i, and French Polynesia.  Formerly known as Zebrasoma veliferum.  Replaced by Zebrasoma desjardinii in the Indian Ocean.
