BROAD STINGRAY     lupe

Uncommon partially buried in sand or mud at any depth where it roots for buried shellfish, creating crater-like depressions.  Tail covered with sharp tubercles.  Attains width of 5 feet.  Endemic to Hawai‘i.  The Hawaiian Stingray, Dasyatis hawaiiensis has a smooth tail.
