Ocean Sunfishes
|
Large pelagic fishes with tall dorsal and anal fins. The caudal
fin is absent, replaced by the clavus, a rudder-like extension of
the dorsal and anal rays. Feeds upon large zooplankton.
Infrequently seen underwater except for a few localities where they

OCEAN SUNFISH
|
This is the heaviest bony fish on record at 4927 pounds, 10 feet long,
and 14 feet tall. Subtropical and temperate seas worldwide.
This is the most common species, congregating in Monterey Bay in the
fall. Called the Ocean Sunfish because they may be encountered
resting on their sides at the surface. Scuba diving with the giant
Mola is an annual event at Blue
Season Bali.

SLENDER MOLA
|
The most uncommon sunfish species, it is sometimes captured by
longline vessels fishing for tuna and swordfish. It is ornately
colored and patterned and has a relatively slender body and small
upturned mouth. Reaches 3 feet. Worldwide in warm water.
