YELLOWBAR PARROTFISH

Quite rare around the Main Hawaiian Islands but locally common in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.  Rough jaws of fused pebble-like teeth graze tough seaweed.  Females mottled gray-brown with tiny white dots and a pale bar behind the pectoral fins, males greenish-gray with a yellow bar with white spots behind the pectoral fin and red cheeks.  Attains 12 inches.  Endemic to Hawai'i.
