Herring & Sardines

Silvery fishes with strongly compressed v-shaped body in cross-section, single dorsal fin, and pelvic fins set far back.  Schooling inhabitants of nearshore waters that feed upon zooplankton.  Most are ecologically & commercially important where they occur in great numbers   None are native to Hawaii.

GOLDSPOT HERRING

Locally common in harbors.  Yellow spots at corner of gill opening.  Attains 5 inches.  Red Sea to the Central Pacific, accidental introduction to Hawaii.  Eating whole fish should be avoided as severe Clupeiod poisoning has been reported.
