BLACKSIDE HAWKFISH        hilu piliko'a

Fairly common on large coral heads in shallow water.  Head brown or pink with dark red freckles and broad black stripe on the side bordered with yellow-white.  Juveniles are white below with yellowish-green over brown or yellow over reddish-black stripes above.  A dark South Pacific form without stripes has a yellow tail.  Attains 9 inches.  Hawai'i & the Indo-Pacific.
