Dottybacks

Dottybacks are small, often colorful fishes with short pelvic fins.  They tend to be shy with a few exceptions.  Replaced by Basslets of the Family Grammatidae in the Western Atlantic.

Inhabits crevices on reefs at scuba depths.  Attains 2.5 inches.  Okinawa to Indonesia, Micronesia, & Samoa.

ROYAL DOTTYBACK

Inhabits crevices on reefs at scuba depths.  Attains 3.5 inches.  Indonesia to Palau & Vanuatu.  Replaced by P. coralensis in the south from the GBR to New Caledonia.

SPLENDID DOTTYBACK

Inhabits coral-rich dropoffs to 130 feet.  Attains 5.5 inches.  Indonesia, Philippines, & NW Australia.

BROWN DOTTYBACK

Inhabits crevices on reefs at scuba depths.  Attains 4 inches.  Sri Lanka to Okinawa, GBR, and the Caroline Islands.

Longfins

Longfins are a small family of cryptic fishes with long pelvic fins.  Most are nocturnal and rarely seen by divers.

REDTIPPED LONGFIN

A cryptic fish from rubble & crevices in shallow water.  Attains 3 inches.  Red Sea to Samoa.

Very similar to the Dottybacks & Longfins, this family is restricted to the Atlantic.

Gramma loreto

Grand Bahama Island, 40 feet

FAIRY BASSLET or ROYAL GRAMMA

Inhabits crevices on reefs at scuba depths.  Cleans parasites from fishes.  Attains 3.5 inches.  Southern Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Florida, Bahamas to Venezuela.
