WHITESADDLE GOATFISH      kūmū

Formerly common in shallow rocky areas but depleted due to overfishing.  Small groups may be observed resting in crevices or hovering near rocky outcrops during the day, dispersing at night to feed upon invertebrates.  Bright pink overall with a small white oval on each side of the caudal peduncle and dark stripes extending rearward from the eye, juveniles greenish-brown above.  A highly esteemed food fish.  Attains 20 inches and 7 pounds.  Endemic to Hawai'i.  Related to Parupeneus ischyrus and Parupeneus ciliatus.
