Inhabits ledges at depths exceeding 100 feet where it may be common.  Robust, with a blunt head and straight jaws, interior of mouth yellowish-orange, golden brown with irregular white speckles.  Attains 71 inches.  Red Sea to Okinawa, Hawaii, and French Polynesia.  Formerly known as Gymnothorax xanthostomus.
