Fairly common as pair close to bottom on reefs in quiet water to 300 feet.  Feeds upon zooplankton and benthic invertebrates, may also clean parasites from other fish.  Attains 8.5 inches.  Has longer snout than H. diphreutes.  Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Persian Gulf, Japan and French Polynesia.
