Pairs are locally common on sheltered coral-rich reefs to 60 feet.  Feeds upon coral tissue.  Attains 6 inches.  Japan to Australia, Hawai'i, and the Tuamotus.  Recently separated from Chaetodon trifasciatus, an Indian Ocean species.
